On Demand Delivery in CA

Why this matters: This article will show you how the WorkWhile app walks you through a quick check-in process so your delivery is accurately tracked from the moment you start.

What Is an On Demand Delivery?

On-Demand Delivery is available to workers who provide delivery services on an independent contractor basis. It gives you flexibility to reserve a delivery block and to accept or decline individual delivery requests on the day of your reserved block.

Before You Arrive: Reserve Your Block

Browse available On-Demand Delivery Blocks in the WorkWhile app. Before you reserve, you'll be able to see the start time, pickup starting location, estimated duration, and estimated pay.

Note: You must have a valid driver's license and a passenger vehicle to complete the deliveries.

Step 1: Check In On Site

At the pickup time, arrive at the pickup location and check in through the WorkWhile app.

**Please remember to enable location and motion tracking on your cellphone for the entire delivery block. This data is needed to ensure that your mileage and time are accurately tracked.

Step 2: Review and Accept Delivery Requests

After checking in, the business will offer you one or more delivery requests. Each delivery request is a list of orders (sometimes called a "route").

For each request, the business will provide you with the addresses where you will make your deliveries.

You decide whether to accept or decline each delivery request offered to you. If you decline a delivery request and no further delivery requests are available, your delivery block may end earlier than the estimated duration and you may receive less than the estimated pay amount.

Step 3: Enter Your Delivery Request Details

Take a look at the first delivery request that you’ve accepted.

In the WorkWhile app, enter the number of distinct orders placed by different customers (sometimes called “stops”) and let us know whether the delivery request requires you to drive further than a 50mi radius from the pickup location

Step 4: Attestation — Confirm You Accepted Voluntarily

After entering the details of your first delivery request, you'll be asked to confirm that you voluntarily accepted the request.

⚠️ The checkbox must be checked to proceed. If you uncheck it, the app will display a warning and you will not be able to continue. If you did not voluntarily accept this delivery request please contact WorkWhile support immediately.

Step 5: Add any additional delivery requests you’ve accepted

If you have accepted more than one delivery request you can add the additional requests. If not, you can start your deliveries.

Step 6: Check Out

Complete the delivery requests you accepted. When you're done, complete the check-out steps through the WorkWhile app.

California Requirements: What You Need to Know

The following requirements apply to all On-Demand Delivery Blocks in California:

Rule

What it means for you

Delivery work only

You may only perform delivery-related activities — for example, selecting, collecting, and delivering items to customers.

50-mile radius

All delivery stops must be within 50 miles of the pickup location.

12-order limit per request

Each delivery request may include no more than 12 distinct orders from different customers.

Multiple requests OK

You may be offered more than one delivery request during a delivery block. You can voluntarily accept multiple requests in a single block.

Voluntary acceptance

You must be free to accept or decline each delivery request.

Why can I do 30+ drop-offs if the limit is 12? The 12-order limit applies to each individual delivery request, not your total stops for the day. You may voluntarily accept 3 delivery requests with 12 orders each, for a total of 36 orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have accepted more than one delivery request? Where do I enter that information? You’ll be able to enter information for all of the delivery requests you’ve accepted. You’ll enter the information one delivery request at a time.

What if I decline delivery requests? That's completely fine. If you decline a delivery request or no further delivery requests are available, your delivery block may end earlier than the estimated duration and you may receive less than the estimated pay amount.

What if the details I entered were wrong? Return to the entry screen and correct them. Every update is logged, so your final confirmed details will be accurate.
