Why this matters: This article will show you how the WorkWhile portal walks you through creating an On Demand Delivery Block when you need delivery drivers.
What Is an On Demand Delivery?
Businesses create an On-Demand Delivery when they need workers who provide delivery services on an independent contractor basis. It gives these workers flexibility to reserve a delivery block and to accept or decline individual delivery requests on the day of the reserved block.
Step 1: Select the option
Step 1: Select Pickup Location
Step 2: Enter Total Expected Mileage
Enter the total number of miles you expect the worker to travel during the On Demand Delivery.
Step 3: Confirm Furthest Order Distance
Confirm that no order offered to a worker requires travel of more than 50 miles from the pickup location.
Step 4: Enter pickup time and expected duration
Enter the pickup time and the estimated duration to complete all delivery requests.
Step 4: Enter the number of drivers you need
Step 5: Enter information about worker compensation
Step 6: Review details and submit
Once submitted, the On Demand Delivery Block will be visible to workers on the WorkWhile app.
California Requirements: What You Need to Know
The following requirements apply to all On-Demand Delivery Blocks in California:
Rule | What it means for you |
Delivery work only | Workers may only perform delivery-related activities — for example, selecting, collecting, and delivering items to customers. |
50-mile radius | All delivery stops must be within 50 miles of the pickup location. |
12-order limit per request | Each delivery request may include no more than 12 distinct orders from different customers. |
Multiple requests OK | Workers may be offered more than one delivery request during a delivery block. |
Voluntary acceptance | You must be free to accept or decline each delivery request. |
Why can workers do 30+ drop-offs if the limit is 12? The 12-order limit applies to each individual delivery request, not total stops for the day. Workers may voluntarily accept 3 delivery requests with 12 orders each, for a total of 36 orders.
