Understanding Your Background Check Letter

If you received a letter about your background check or driving record, here's what it means and what to do — in plain terms.

It's not a final decision

A "pre-adverse action" letter is a heads-up. Something on your background check or motor vehicle record (MVR) might affect your eligibility for shifts with WorkWhile — but no final decision has been made. The letter exists to give you a chance to respond first. Your account is not closed.

You have 10 business days

Your exact deadline is listed in your letter. Before that date, you can do either or both of the following:

1. Dispute errors on the report

If the report is wrong — a charge or violation that isn't yours, something dismissed or expunged, an accident where you weren't at fault, or a suspension that's been resolved — file a dispute directly with Yardstik, our background check provider. They're required by law to investigate. If your state DMV record itself contains an error, you may also need to correct it directly with your DMV.

2. Tell us your side of the story

If the report is accurate but there's more context we should know, reply to your letter or message us here. Helpful things to include:

  • What happened and when — older matters count less, and violations beyond our lookback windows may not count at all

  • What's changed since — recovery, treatment, steady work, community programs

  • Documentation — court records, completion certificates, proof a fine was paid, police or insurance reports for not-at-fault accidents, or a letter of reference

  • For driving records — confirmation your license is currently active and valid

You don't need a lawyer or perfect paperwork. A clear, honest explanation in your own words genuinely matters — a real person reviews every response.

What happens next

If you respond by the deadline, we review everything you send before making any decision.

If we don't hear from you, we'll make a final decision based on the report as-is. If that decision goes against you, you'll receive a second letter — a "final adverse action" letter — explaining the outcome and your rights, including how to dispute the report with Yardstik.

Common questions

Does this mean I'm removed from WorkWhile? No. Many workers who respond with context or corrections are cleared to keep working.

My issue is only on my driving record — can I still work other shifts? Possibly. Even if driving roles aren't available to you, you may still qualify for other types of work on the platform.

I already responded — when will I hear back? We review responses in the order received and will follow up as soon as your review is complete. You don't need to send multiple messages — your response is in the queue.

Who do I contact about what?
